Get a jump start on your New Year's resolutions and schedule that annual check-up. Here are five good reasons to do that:
Physicians at the United Heart & Vascular Clinic are now performing transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), a minimally invasive procedure to treat aortic stenosis. With TAVR, a team of interventional cardiologists and cardiac surgeons place a bioprosthetic heart valve mounted on a stent frame within a diseased aortic valve, displacing the old valve and improving blood flow.
Individuals with severe, symptomatic aortic stenosis, usually the elderly, have a high mortality rate after one year of treatment with only medication. Clinical trials have shown that TAVR has a lower mortality rate.
TAVR has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for inoperable or high-risk surgical patients, including those with severe degeneration of a previously placed prosthetic tissue heart valve. Patients with intermediate surgical risk may be eligible for participation in clinical trials comparing conventional surgery to TAVR.
The United Heart & Vascular Clinic, which sees patients at the Apple Valley Medical Center, has a comprehensive structural heart program. Its team consists of interventional cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, advanced imaging cardiologists, cardiac anesthesiologists and a dedicated staff of nurses, technicians and coordinators. It also collaborates with Minneapolis Heart Institute and Metropolitan Heart and Vascular Institute.
The program is being coordinated by Erin Baran, RN, BSN, CCRN, CSC. For more information, contact United Heart & Vascular Clinic at 651-241-2964.
